1/ CSR action

Preparing for disaster management; a small-scale sample that accurately captures the requirements of a large-scale project.

Delegates are invited to participate in cleaning up Keri Forest, on Sunday 12th of June, an action implemented with the support of the Region of Crete and the Municipality of Maleviziou, which shall provide all the necessary cleaning materials. At the same time, it will be an action to inform the way in which the process of guarding and monitoring of the forest during the fire-fighting period takes place.

The action will begin at 11:00 in the morning, with the meeting point being the 1st Forest Outpost. The participants will be assisted by the volunteer groups that are active in the specific area; the LEFED (Armed Forces Reserve Club), the ECC (Red Cross) and the ESA (Hellenic Rescue Team).

2/ Opening Ceremony Music Event
Aegean Jazz – Vasilis Rakopoulos quintet

A particularly atmospheric concert based on Aegean musical characteristics and cadences, within the context of contemporary jazz trends. It is an improvisational composition which falls within the international movement of ‘Intuitive Music’. The project was developed in the aftermath of concerts by Marcus Stockhausen and Vasilis Rakopoulos within the context of performances and workshops organized by the Goethe Institute and the University of Macedonia and C.C.C.C of Heraklion.
The musicians get together at a unique level of experimental ethos and spirit, acting in an “intuitive” musical & poetical manner, setting the musical dialog on a level of high alertness and emotional content. It is not only that the original compositions are characterized by the austerity of the Cycladic idiom, but also the way of approaching and interpreting, searching for a sound which echoes the clarity of the light of the Cycladic islands.

Takis Farazis pn / Kb
Andreas Polyzogopoulos trumpet, flugelhorn
Vasilis Rakopoulos classical & midi gt, vocals
Petros Varthakouris double bass, vocals

Exhibition Tours at the Natural History Museum of Crete
The Natural History Museum of Crete (NHMC) of the University of Crete demonstrates with an impressive manner the natural environment of eastern Mediterranean area with special emphasis on Greece and Crete. The exhibition is located at Sofokli Venizelou Avenue, the coastal road of Heraklion. Interesting exhibition units are:

  • the Mega-Dioramas that constitute the biggest part of the Museum’s exhibition. These are realistic representations of ecosystems found in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
  • the “Living Museum” which is a special arranged area with small scale aquariums and terrariums housing living animals that can be found in Eastern Mediterranean region.
  • the educational seismic table (earthquake simulator) which offers visitors the opportunity to learn about earthquakes and experience, in a safe environment, and feel real earthquakes.
  • the Stavros Niarchos Discovery Center which is specially designed for children up to the age of 15. It is where cutting edge technology is combined with more traditional educational methods, in order to make the learning process more appealing to children. All educational activities are taking place in a set designed to the detail, to imitate the natural environment of the east Mediterranean, with emphasis on the island of Crete.
